First Reader in Italian is a graded intensive reader for the learners of the Italian language. It is recommend to be studied with/after(reading first 20 or so chapters of) L'italiano secondo il metodo natura series. Provided that you are interested in studying Italian grammar, you can also pick up author's First Book in Italian and study simultaneously.

"It is an experience all too common that the majority of pupils who have studied modern foreign languages, even for several years, though they may be somewhat familiar with the rules of grammar and may be able to translate a passage, are not capable of exact and speedy comprehension of the foreign language to which they may have devoted a considerable amount of time. Until recently, this unpleasant and truly unfortunate experience has been quite common with students of Italian, more so than with those of other modern foreign languages studied in the schools, largely because there has been a deplorable lack of adequate up-to-date Italian textbooks for classroom use in the language. In the past few years, some textbooks have been written, and these, I believe, have, to some degree, been instrumental in stimulating the study of the Italian language in the secondary schools and colleges of the country; however, there has been particularly a long-felt need for a truly beginners’ reader.

"The First Reader in Italian," as its title indicates, is a text for use by students who are beginning their work in Italian. It is simple enough to be used at the very outset of the course and is graded so that the elementary student can use it without recourse to the dictionary. One of its most satisfying features is the method it employs, which aims at the development of linguistic ability through the pupil’s own self-expression in the foreign language."
